The International Legal Informatics Symposium (IRIS) will take place at the Law Faculty of the University of Salzburg from 20-22 February 2014. Already being in its 14th year, IRIS has been established as the largest and most important academic conference on computers and law in Austria and Central Europe.
The leading topic of IRIS2014 is:
Transparency
Transparency means in politics and thus also in law traceability, visibility and availability of information and knowledge. In informatics, it is understood as "invisibility of system components."
Transparency is one of the key objectives of legal informatics with the purpose of improving the legal system. Access to justice has been significantly improved through extensive use of legal information systems. Legal documents are available for all on the Internet. Citizens' information systems have greatly improved the support for citizens. But the development continues. For a long time, an IT-appropriate transformation of legal rules and facts is envisaged, in order to support legal decisions by means of a formalization of the law. In E-Government, transparency stands for open data and open government. Transparency is also important for the assessment of the proportionality of the use of private data that is frighteningly increasing. Participation and accountability are impossible without transparency. It is important that the principles of Internet governance shall continue to support this transparency.
The IRIS Conference is known for its interdisciplinary approach and the involvement of government, business and civil society.

Helpful information for Participants who present a paper:
The presentations are grouped into sessions. All speakers are restricted to 20 minutes. At the end of each session, there is time for an extensive discussion.
The official language of the conference will be German. Presentations of papers and statements during discussions can, however, be delivered in English as well.
The publication of proceedings is planned.
