Abstract

Purpose – To analyze the analyze the controversy about the allocation of critical Internet resources, generated by ICANN’s new gTLD program.
Methodology/approach/design- This paper presents an exploratory case study about the .AMAZON controversy. The analysis is based on data collected from GAC’s reports, ICANN policy reports, news articles, and relevant policy websites, and blogs, covering ICANN’s new gTLD policy. The theoretical framework for this study is the political economy, applied to the Internet Critical Resources. 
Findings – This paper presents the preliminary findings of the .AMAZON case, a contested prime example in ICANN’s effort to extend the Internet’s name space.
Pratical implications: The role of ICANN as administrator of the root and the new gTLD program.
Originality/value – The importance of this paper is its specific contribution to the debate about the controversy of the new gTLD program. Findings may help to inform those related controversies.
